Some affiliates of Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (Wabam) have taken the association to the High Court of Malawi over its conduct prior to holding the Mr Malawi pageantry.

The case will be presided over by Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda, according to court documents.

The claimants are some affiliates of Wabam led by Ishmael Gringer Makawa and Thokozani Chagwirampeni.

To preside over the case: Nyirenda

They are accusing Wabam executive of, among others, failing to release money for accommodation, food and transportation of contestants, unlawful and secretive selection of a panel of judges and lack of transparency in the whole process of organising the pageantry.

But in an interview on Tuesday, Wabam president Arox Kamng’ona said he is yet to be served with the court summons.

“I am yet to get the court summons officially, but once I do that, will be able to comment more,” he said.

The claimants’ lawyer Oscar Taulo Zumga said they have served the court summons to Kamng’ona.

He said: “We are yet to provide them with hard copies, but we have served them electronically and the president has acknowledged.  They have  28 days from the day which we served them on October 28 to respond.”

Makawa confirmed taking Wabam to the High Court, saying the executive has failed in carrying out its responsibilities, especially the way they organised the Mr Malawi.

“I can’t say much because the issue is being handled by our lawyer. But we feel the executive committee has on several times breached the constitution and we are seeking legal remedies to dissolve it,” he said.
